How Do We Actually Hear God's Voice?

How Do We Actually Hear God's Voice?

One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "How do I know if God is speaking?"

For a long time, I thought hearing God meant waiting for a dramatic moment a clear answer, a detailed plan, or specific instructions for every step ahead.

But over the years, I've discovered that God often leads very differently.

Rather than handing us the entire map, He usually gives us enough light for the next step.

One Step at a Time

We naturally want to know where our lives will be months or years from now. We want God to explain every detail before we're willing to move.

Yet throughout Scripture we see something different.

Abraham was told to leave his country before he knew where he was going.

The Israelites followed the pillar of cloud one day at a time.

The disciples simply heard Jesus say, "Follow Me."

Again and again, God led people one step at a time.

How This Has Looked in My Own Life

I've experienced this over and over again in my own journey.

When I first started Glow Beyond Fifty, I truly believed I was creating a ministry centered around wellness. My heart was to encourage women to care for the bodies God had given them through healthy eating, movement, and living well as we grow older.

But God didn't reveal the whole picture.

Instead, He gave me one step.

Then another.

As I continued following Him, the focus slowly began to change. Wellness was no longer the destination it became the doorway.

The Lord began leading me into what had always been the deeper calling: helping people know Him more intimately, hear His voice, understand the work of the Holy Spirit, worship Him more deeply, and experience the transforming power of His love and grace.

Even my website reflects that journey.

I didn't redesign it overnight with a complete vision in mind. The Lord kept showing me one piece at a time. One page would change, then another. New blog topics emerged. Entire sections were rewritten. Categories shifted. Videos led to blogs, blogs led to resources, and slowly the message became clearer.

Looking back, I can see what God was building all along.

At the time, I only had the next clue.

Why Doesn't God Show Us Everything?

I don't believe it's because He's withholding something good from us. Rather, I believe He is inviting us into a relationship of trust.

If God handed us every detail of the journey, we might become more dependent on the plan than on the One leading us.

Instead, He teaches us to stay close enough to recognize His voice and trust Him for today's step.

Learning His Voice

The more time we spend with the Lord in His Word, in prayer, in worship, and simply enjoying His presence the more familiar His voice becomes. It's much like recognizing the voice of someone you deeply love. You don't have to analyze every word because you've spent time with them.

Hearing God isn't primarily about learning a method.

It's about growing in relationship.

The Next Clue

As I look back over the years, I can see that God rarely showed me the whole picture. Instead, He gave me one impression, one verse, one opportunity, one gentle nudge at a time. Only later did I realize that each small clue was leading me into something far greater than I could have imagined.

Perhaps that's where you find yourself today. Maybe you're waiting for God to reveal the entire journey before taking the first step.

If so, don't be discouraged if He simply gives you today's clue. Often, that's exactly how He leads. Trust Him with the step He's showing you today and leave tomorrow in His hands.
